When a friend of mine from my novel class told me there was an editor of Erotic fiction saying that women can’t write sex I almost choked on my hot chocolate. First I thought she was joking, but her face told me otherwise. She said the interview was on ‘The Book Show’ on ABC National Radio. Here is the link if anyone is interested in listening.
Being a writer of some very erotic sex scenes in my book, Xenos, I have to say I’m a little, just a little offended by the comments of Katie Copstick. I have been told by mentor, Christos Tsiolkas, that I write sex really well, and that’s coming from an author that writes sex brilliantly. But this blog isn’t about me validating my writing, it’s about voicing my concerns about obvious discrimination of women, by a woman I might add.

I was a bit thrown when I got an email from Rjurik Davidson, associate editor at Overland, congratulating me on being accepted into the Overland master class for progressive writers. I knew the short story I submitted was progressive, but I guess I didn’t have enough faith that my story would get me a place in the class. After getting over the initial shock of it, I was flattered, excited and nervous at the same time. I was nervous about meeting the other eight writers selected and worried that they would all be intellectual and political and use difficult words that I’ve never heard of. Not only that, but I was terribly nervous about being in the same space as three writers I highly respected: Tony Birch, Cate Kennedy, and Lucy Sussex.

Well, here it is, my first blog. When I first created my website, I couldn’t think of what to write as my first blog entry. Not only that, but I was afraid of posting my thoughts for entire cyberspace to see; and judge. But all it took was one shitty day to get me started. I guess that’s what triggers all my writing – something happens that infuriates me so much that I have to write about it or I’ll explode. At then the aftermath of the incident just makes me sad that the world is the way that it is; and I write because maybe at least one person will read it and change. But everyone out there that’s ready to pounce on me as I blurt out my opinions, just remember that they are opinions, and if I accidentally offend anyone with my views I apologise in advance. Sorry.
So the incident that triggered this blog was a visit to Highpoint shopping centre (or Knifepoint as some people may call it). I had purchased a winter jacket for my daughter two weeks ago and the zip broke two days later. After it broke, I rang up the shop and told them that it broke. They told me to bring it in for an exchange or refund.
